Having recently moved back
To my childhood neighbourhood,
I couldn't have lived anywhere better
For dealing with a monster.
Near my father, my old friends.
He was in my stomping ground.
The Hemlock store,
A little Mom and Pop
To everyone around.
The elementary,
Middle and high schools
All situated across the street
From each other.
Lots of kids.
And lots of parents.
Picking up their kids.
The stadium where all the track
And football games were played out.
Our baseball field.
It was an ideal place
For a Monster to embarrass
And damage.
Everyone knew me.
I had a reputation,
I was a good girl,
Who made friends and family laugh.
No one knew him
When they saw me with a man
Who was not my husband,
They reacted.
'Hey Emily; you fancy coming out
For another drink tonight?
I'd love for you to suck on my dick
Like you did last weekend.'
He was beaten;
Badly.
Stayed in hospital for over a week.
They thought they were helping.
Couldn't see,
How they were making things worse.
It stopped, for a while.
But I knew it hadn't ended.
His pride; or something else,
Had been dishonoured.
Made me a bigger trophy.
A bigger Fish.
'Keys that jingle in your pocket
Words that jangle in your head
Why did summer go so quickly
Was it something that you said?'
~Bergman, Legrand
