Firewood

Firewood

Taking on time,
Through aimless waves
And immutable distance
Though not of my memory

The air tarries 'neath older skies
Where I watch working mother
Fill outstretched arms
With the warmth of firewood

Until the call of white laughter
I too had worried as did the younger
When the load overcame
And wood fell scattered
Along snow-covered ground

Yet smile even as I do now
While Purple spans my emotion
And dreams flicker and fade
Further still from gladness
Unto the cool hardening of my heart.
